May 1 is Doctors Day, a time to recognize the hard work and dedication of Nova Scotia’s physicians.
Physicians are key to keeping our communities healthy and thriving. Not only do they serve on the front lines, providing patient care in family practices, community clinics and hospitals, but they’re also busy behind the scenes, working on medical research, innovation and public health policy.
Through their leadership, physicians are helping to shape the future of healthcare in our province, working as mentors and teachers to train and support the new providers coming on the scene.
We know it’s difficult for the thousands of Nova Scotians on the waitlist for a family doctor. No one wants to see people struggling to access healthcare, and our physicians are working harder than ever and in new ways to serve patients and fill service gaps in their communities.
As part of our Doctors Day celebrations, we love highlighting Nova Scotia physicians who are making a positive difference for their patients.
In Pugwash, family physician Dr. Peter Blaikie advocated for years to get a new hospital in his rural community. Dr. Blaikie says the modern facility is key to attracting physicians and other healthcare providers to the area and encouraging them to stay. Take a peek inside the hospital.
In Sydney, general surgeon Dr. Heather Poushay helps people overcome their fear of surgery. She also supports patients beyond the operating room, helping them navigate their healthcare journey. Watch a video about her practice.
And in New Glasgow, emergency medicine physician Dr. Deborah Straub provides compassionate, patient-centred care. Despite working in a busy emergency department, she connects people to the care they need, including community support. See her in action in this video.
These are just a few of the Nova Scotia doctors we’re thrilled to recognize this year. Head over to our website to browse more profiles of local physicians providing exceptional health care and scan hundreds of heartfelt shout-outs from patients for their doctors.
Is there a family physician or specialist you’d like to recognize? Add your message to our recognition page. At your next appointment, take a moment to tell your doctor what they mean to you. It will brighten their day and yours, too!
Doctors Day was first recognized as the official day of appreciation for Nova Scotia’s medical profession in 2013. May 1 was selected as Doctors Day to mark the birthday of Canada’s first female physician, Dr. Emily Stowe.
