5 tips to be well this fall

With school and work back on their usual groove, ’tis the season for colds, coughs and sore throats.

Spending more time inside means more opportunities to catch and spread infections. You may feel like it’s a losing battle, but thankfully there are some simple things you can do to help ward off illness and stay in the game.

Slow down
It’s easy to overdo it in the fall – you’re in the midst of busy schedules, new activities and other obligations, which can make you feel run down. Take time to rest and relax each day (find something that’s relaxing for you – a hobby or daily practice that calms you), and make sure you’re getting enough sleep (seven to eight hours per night). If you start to feel stressed or anxious, add some meditation, mindfulness or yoga into your routine to feel more calm and centred, or look for apps that can help support your mental health.

Get immunized
Vaccinations are key to help keep illnesses in check and stop them from spreading in your social circles. Get the flu shot and the COVID-19 shot, as well as any other immunizations you’re due for to help you stay on your feet. Remember: it’s safe to get your flu shot and COVID-19 shot at the same time. And if you’re a Nova Scotian over age 65, you can get the enhanced flu vaccine, which gives added protection, for free.

New this year: you can now book up to six family members for the same appointment. You can book through the online portal, call 1-833-797-7772 or visit the Public Health Mobile Unit website for a list of drop-in clinics. You can also book your appointment using the MyHealthNS app.

Practice good hygiene
The basics still apply: wash your hands often with warm soapy water (especially after being out and before eating); sneeze and cough into a tissue or your elbow. If you feel unwell, stay home and away from others, especially friends or relatives who are older or immunocompromised. If you must head out while sick, consider wearing a mask (and remember that masks are back for visitors and health-care providers working in ambulatory and inpatient care areas of Nova Scotia hospitals). Wearing a mask is also an effective way to protect yourself from viruses circulating in the community.

Eat well
Farmers’ markets are overflowing with tasty local fruits and veggies at this time of year; local produce hasn’t travelled hundreds of kilometres, so it’s super fresh and packed to the max with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can boost your immune system while fuelling your day: think squash, pumpkins, carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, spinach and more. If you’re getting tired of the usual go-tos, it’s a great time to expand your palate and try a new-to-you local ingredient.

Head outside
Find ways to enjoy the crisp, sunny days while they’re here! Being outside can energize you, boost your immune system and help fend off the blahs. Ride your bike for errands, go for a walk on your lunch break, get your garden ready for the cold or plan a fun hike this weekend. Any excuse to get outside and get the blood flowing will do wonders for your physical and mental health!

No matter what strategies you embrace this month, keep in mind that it’s all about finding ways that can help yourself stay healthy and feel better.
