Dr. Rebecca “Becky” Dobson receives the Senior Membership Award in recognition for her contributions in cardiac radiology.Practising medicine for 40 years, Dr. Dobson began her medical career as a GP anesthetist in the Arctic. She dabbled in internal medicine before finding her home in radiology at the QEII hospital in Halifax. “I love solving the puzzles of diagnosis through imaging, specifically cardiac and gastro-intestinal imaging,” she said.
She quickly became the go-to colleague for cardiac angiograms, offering advice and guidance for difficult cases. With patient care her North star, Dr. Dobson worked hard to improve communication among physicians, ensuring that each patient received the right diagnostic test at the right time.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Dobson was a devoted teacher and mentor to hundreds of medical learners and colleagues. She not only taught radiology and cardiac residents, but also physicians in many other specialties, including internal medicine and emergency medicine.
She has served as undergraduate education lead and assistant professor in the Department of Radiology at Dalhousie University, section head of cardiac imaging and member of the admissions committee for Dalhousie Medical School, among other roles.
Her advice for future physicians is to “find a branch of medicine that excites you. Everything else is just stuff.”
Dr. Dobson said her best non-medical accomplishment was raising her son. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in the woods with her dog.
