Lack of access to a family doctor is an issue that plagues many Nova Scotians. In fact, more than 10 percent of the province’s population lacks reliable, timely access to primary health care.According to Statistics Canada, almost 90,000 Nova Scotians are without a family doctor. A survey commissioned by the provincial government in the fall of 2016 says that number might be even higher.
Primary health care is the backbone of Nova Scotia’s health-care system. It is the first place people go for health-care or wellness advice and programs, treatment of a health issue or injury, and diagnosis and management of a health condition. Primary care also keeps people healthy and out of hospitals, emergency rooms and long-term care.
But the statistics show that many more than the 25,000 people on the list need a family doctor.
Doctors Nova Scotia believes that every Nova Scotian should be able to access a primary health care team that includes a family physician.
If you need a family doctor but you’re not on the waiting list, sign up now. It’s the only way to ensure that the Nova Scotia Health Authority is planning for your health-care needs.
To sign up, visit Need a Family Practice or call 811, Monday through Friday, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
